Benin and Togo, which are neighboring small countries and share borders with Burkina Faso, Ghana and Nigeria, are among the poorest countries in Africa, depending mainly on agriculture and animal husbandry. Many children are sold every year to landowners in neighboring countries who have large plantations, to work there compulsorily until they come of age. The money is shared by the child’s father and the “middleman” who makes the deal with the landowner. However, even among the children who are not trafficked, few go to school, since education is not free, and the parents are unable to pay the school tuition.
